You may have noticed that both Mercedes and Jaguar are rumored to be switching to inline sixes for the next generation. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! written by Jason Cammisa for Road and Track (I believe he is with Motor Trend currently).

In a nutshell, everyone has been using 90 degree V6s because they could just take off two cylinders and do a bunch of over-engineering in order to make the 90 degree six run smoothly. I guess 120 degrees is ideal, but obviously that’s too wide to be useful, so 60 degrees is great (as anyone who has experienced Toyota’s 3.5L will attest). With emissions, fuel economy, and costs goals becoming stricter, it is becoming more cost effective to produce I6s. Engineers win, accountants win, and enthusiasts win. Can’t beat that!

What’s better is a boxer 6. But that would be TOO WEIRD.

I’m so curious about Jaguar’s future engine plans. The report going around says that the petrol engines will go from 300 HP to 500 HP so does that mean no more V8s also will those straight sixes have forced induction in anyway and if so Super or Turbo?

Plus I hope they put two of them side by side, make a 6.0 V12, attach a KERS and slot it into the back of this:

Besides Porsche, you’ve only got Subaru that has a Boxer-6 engine. I doubt you’ll see that spread to any other manufacturer.

Straight-6 is pretty neat though to see it making a comeback.

I have an I5 and an I6, I like them.

Both evidence that a boxer six is TOO WEIRD.

They will most definitely be boosted, and probably turbo.

I’m curious about whether they will supercharge the I6 too. I doubt it though and suspect they’ll do a turbo 4 and a turbo 6 for everything up to “S” variants and the top end of the compact cars and CUVs. The V8 will stay supercharged only and be in the top midsize-plus and sportscar variants. So an XE-SVR would be a 500hp I6, while the XF-SVR would be a supercharged V8 with 550hp and up.

Straight-6 is best 6. I would think an I6 would have better packaging too, as well as a better torque curve.

I think it’s all but guaranteed they go with turbocharging given it’s basically an extension of the Ingenium family that is also all turbocharged.

Well I hope they start supercharging I6s again or even better go full TVR and build a 500HP N/A I6.

I hope the I5 replaces the 300hp I4s running around. I’m in love with the RS3 completely for that engine. Wish the Focus RS and Volvos stayed a five.

Sadly that will never happen. Though, I prefer turbo to supercharger.

Makes sense but what about the XJ though? As there was a report saying that they will either faze it out or go full Bentley/RR level of luxury and opulence and if they do go with the latter I doubt they could get away with sharing an engine with a cheaper model *cough* V12 *COUGH*.

Well, the V6 became popular because manufacturers needed to fit a large powerful motor into a FWD chassis. (Most V6's before the 80's were just chopped up V8s) Now that need is best met with a turbo 4cyl.

theres just not much need for V6s anymore especially n/a ones.

I found that interesting. Jason mentioned that the supercharged V6 Jags just put counter weights where the two missing cylinders go. So they don’t even bother to repackage the V8 engine. I assume this also means every current Jag can hold the 550hp V8 (though obviously power figures would change due to cooling and exhaust length and other stuff I know nothing about).

More info on the Referenced JAG V6 , its a little more than just a hacked up 90 degree V, but it still kinda is. That being said, most modern V6's are 72 or 60 degrees and bespoke V6 designs, not hodge podges like these. Ironically, the main reason JAG is going this route is exactly the same kind of add 2 take away 2 mentality, in that they can focus on the ingenium I4 core technology and tack on a par of cylinders and get a 6, no need to mess with a V engine at all anymore.

I figured it’s coming back because it never should have freaking left in the first place.
